There’s a small moment on the golf course that I keep noticing.
The beverage cart pulls up.
Someone orders a Transfusion, a G&T, a vodka lemonade, or whatever sounds good halfway through the round.
A minute later, they’re holding a cold drink in a simple disposable plastic cup.
Then the beverage cart drives away.
And if you’re walking the course with a push cart, a very practical question appears:
Where exactly is that drink supposed to go?
A sealed beer can is easy.
A bottle is easy.
A plastic cocktail cup full of ice and liquid is a different story.
For the Push Cart Mafia, that small problem becomes much more noticeable because we’re not sitting in a ride-on cart surrounded by molded cup holders.
We’re walking.
The cart is moving over grass.
The frame leans.
The ground changes angle.
And preferably, both of our hands are doing something other than protecting a cocktail for the next six holes.
That got me looking at golf cocktails from a product designer’s point of view.
What Are Golfers Actually Drinking on the Course?
I went down another Reddit rabbit hole recently to see what golfers actually drink during a casual round.
The answers were all over the place.
Light American lagers showed up plenty.
So did IPAs, hard seltzers, G&Ts, whiskey and Radlers.
And one drink kept appearing again and again:
the Transfusion.
Then another group of golfers started talking just as enthusiastically about water, Liquid IV, LMNT, Nuun and other electrolyte drinks during hot summer rounds.
That actually made the problem more interesting to me.
Because from a product-design point of view, the holder doesn’t really care whether you’re drinking:
beer,
a cocktail,
coffee,
lemonade,
or an electrolyte drink.
It cares about something much less exciting:
diameter, height, center of gravity and movement.
And on a golf push cart, there is plenty of movement.
The Beverage Cart Solves One Problem and Creates Another
Disposable plastic cups make perfect sense for beverage-cart service.
They’re light.
They’re fast to serve.
They’re inexpensive.
And nobody expects the beverage-cart staff to hand out glassware on the back nine.
But those cups weren’t designed specifically around walking golf.
Once the drink leaves the beverage cart, it may have to deal with:
uneven fairway grass,
small bumps,
side slopes,
turns,
uphill and downhill sections,
and the constant little movements of a push-cart frame.
A rigid cup holder follows the cart.
If the cart leans, the holder leans.
If the cup is tall and filled close to the top, that starts to matter.
Nobody wants to spend the back nine carrying a cocktail in one hand like it’s a relay baton.
Especially when the whole reason we joined the Push Cart Mafia was to enjoy walking the course.
Push Cart Mafia Has a Different Drink Problem
Walking golfers have less space to work with than golfers using ride-on carts.
That’s part of the appeal.
A good push cart is simple.
But every accessory still has to earn its place.
An umbrella holder.
A phone.
A glove.
A speaker.
Maybe a cooler.
And then somebody hands you a cocktail.
I’ve already spent a lot of time looking at golf push cart accessories because this is where small design problems start piling up.
The goal isn’t to turn a push cart into a rolling hardware store.
It’s to solve the little annoyances without making walking 18 holes less enjoyable.
An open drink is one of those annoyances.
The Cooler Only Solves the First Half of the Problem
I’ve been working on a hard cooler mount for golf push carts.
That solves one problem:
Where do I keep cold drinks while I walk?
Six unopened cans sitting in a cooler are relatively simple.
The problem changes the moment you open one.
And it changes again when the beverage cart hands you a mixed drink in a tall disposable cup.
That’s why I also started experimenting with a golf push cart beer holder.
The beer holder got me thinking more seriously about movement.
But cocktails brought me back to an older design of mine.
Coffee.
My Coffee Gimbal Was Already Solving the Same Physics
I originally designed my Coffee Gimbal around takeaway coffee cups.
The original problem was simple:
A lightweight disposable cup.
Liquid inside.
A moving platform underneath it.
When the platform changes angle, the cup changes angle with it.
Now replace the coffee with:
ice,
vodka,
ginger ale,
grape juice,
lime,
or whatever happens to be in your golf cocktail.
Mechanically, not much has changed.
That was the moment I realized something I probably should have noticed earlier:
the Gimbal doesn’t know whether it’s holding coffee or a Transfusion.
Gravity certainly doesn’t know.
The physical problem is the same.
Why I Used Three Balancing Rings
The Coffee Gimbal uses three concentric balancing rings rather than one rigid cup socket.
The innermost ring has an opening of approximately 82 mm, or 3.23 inches.
I originally developed that dimension around common takeaway coffee cups.
But it also works with many of the disposable drink cups I keep seeing used for cold drinks and mixed cocktails.
The three rings are allowed to pivot relative to one another.
So instead of forcing the cup to follow every angle of the mounting point, the balancing structure gives the cup some freedom to respond independently.
Gravity does part of the work.
That distinction becomes much more interesting on a push cart than it does on a perfectly flat desk.
Fairways aren’t flat.
Neither are cart paths.
The cart leans.
Your mounting tube changes angle.
The drink inside the cup is moving at the same time.
A rigid cup holder transfers those changes directly to the cup.
A multi-ring gimbal allows some of that movement to happen around the cup instead.
The Ball Joint and the Gimbal Do Two Different Jobs
There’s another part of the design that I think is worth separating.
The mounting system uses an adjustable ball joint.
That lets me position the holder at the angle I want when I install it.
But the ball joint and the balancing rings aren’t doing the same job.
The ball joint handles the angle I choose.
The balancing rings handle some of the movement I didn’t choose.
That difference matters.
I can mount the holder on a push cart frame, position it where the cup is comfortable to reach, and then let the gimbal structure deal with smaller changes in orientation as the cart moves.
I find that much more useful than simply adding more rigid plastic around the cup.
Current Gimbal Specs
These are the current physical specifications that matter most for this use case:
- Balancing system: Three concentric moving rings
- Inner ring opening: Approximately 82 mm / 3.23 in
- Outer ring diameter: Approximately 4.8 in / 122 mm
- Main structure: High-impact ABS
- Ring pivot hardware: Metal pivot points, including brass hardware in the balancing assembly
- Product weight: Approximately 7.3 oz / 207 g
- Drink size: Designed around takeaway cups up to approximately 20 oz
- Positioning: Adjustable ball-joint mounting system
- Rotation: Up to approximately 90° for positioning
- Release: Quick-removal structure designed to come off in seconds
- Original use case: Disposable takeaway coffee cups
- Push-cart use case: Coffee, cold drinks and compatible disposable cocktail cups
Those numbers matter more to me than calling something a “universal cup holder.”
A product is only universal until somebody shows up with a cup that doesn’t fit.
Golf courses use different cup sizes.
Beverage carts use different suppliers.
A Transfusion at one course may not arrive in exactly the same cup as a vodka lemonade at another.
So I’d still check the actual cup dimensions rather than pretend every disposable cocktail cup in America is identical.
That’s a much more useful standard than putting the word universal on a product page.
Why 82 mm Matters
Making the opening bigger isn’t automatically better.
The larger the opening becomes, the less support you may have around smaller cups.
Make it too small and larger cups won’t fit.
The 82 mm inner opening was a compromise that came originally from takeaway coffee.
It gives me room for many common disposable drink formats without turning the holder into an oversized bucket hanging from the push cart.
But diameter is only part of the problem.
A cocktail full of ice has a changing center of gravity.
The ice moves.
The liquid moves.
The golfer drinks some of it.
The ice melts.
The mass inside the cup changes throughout the round.
That’s why I’m more interested in the balancing structure than simply making a giant cup opening.
The goal isn’t to clamp the drink as tightly as possible.
The goal is to give it a sensible place to sit while the push cart underneath it keeps moving.
A Gimbal Helps — It Doesn’t Defeat Physics
This is one thing I want to be very clear about.
I don’t describe this design as spill-proof.
I don’t claim the drink will be always level.
And I definitely wouldn’t say 100% stable.
An open cup is still an open cup.
Hit a large hole with a cocktail filled right to the rim and physics can still win.
What the balancing structure can do is give the inner holder some independence from the changing angle of the push cart.
In normal movement, gravity can help the cup remain closer to level than it would in a completely rigid holder.
That’s a much more accurate description of what the mechanism is actually doing.
And as a designer, I’d rather explain what a product really does than invent a stronger claim for a product page.
Coffee on the Front Nine. A Cocktail on the Back Nine.
This might be my favorite part of the idea.
Imagine a morning tee time.
You start with coffee.
A few holes later, you switch to water.
The afternoon heats up and maybe you mix an electrolyte drink.
Then the beverage cart appears on the back nine and somebody orders a Transfusion.
Why should every one of those drinks require a different accessory?
That feels backwards to me.
I’d rather design around:
the cup, the movement and the mounting environment.
Not the name of the beverage.
That’s why I don’t really think of this as a dedicated “cocktail holder.”
It’s a drink holder designed around the reality of walking golf.
The drink changes.
The mechanical problem doesn’t.
What I’d Look for in a Golf Push Cart Cocktail Holder
If I were choosing a holder specifically for disposable golf-course cocktail cups, I’d look at five things.
1. Cup dimensions
The word “cocktail” tells you almost nothing about the container.
Look at the actual cup diameter and height.
2. Movement
A push cart spends very little time on a perfectly level laboratory floor.
A holder needs to make sense on real grass, slopes and cart paths.
3. Mounting position
The drink should be easy to reach without interfering with your hands, brake, umbrella holder or other accessories.
4. Removal
I don’t want another permanent lump of hardware hanging from the push cart when I’m not using it.
5. Versatility
If the same holder can handle morning coffee, water and an afternoon cocktail, it earns its place on the cart much more easily.
That last point matters to me.
Push carts have limited real estate.
Every accessory should justify the space it occupies.
The Cup Matters More Than the Cocktail
This is one of those product-design lessons that keeps coming back.
The accessory doesn’t care whether the liquid inside is expensive.
It doesn’t care whether the golfer ordered a Transfusion because it’s tradition or because somebody on Reddit told them to try one.
It cares about:
cup diameter,
height,
weight,
center of gravity,
mounting position,
and movement.
That’s the part I can design around.
And once I started looking at golf cocktails that way, they stopped being a completely new problem.
They became another version of something I’d already been working on for years.
One More Small Problem for the Push Cart Mafia
This is becoming a pattern with Woorlax.
I started looking at why golfers prefer a 3-wheel golf push cart.
Then I started noticing all the things walking golfers add to them.
Umbrella holders.
Speakers.
Coolers.
Beer holders.
Now cocktails.
None of these are huge problems.
That’s kind of the point.
Golf is leisure time.
You’re already out there because you want to enjoy the day.
The equipment shouldn’t keep interrupting that.
So if the beverage cart hands you a cold cocktail halfway through the round, I think it deserves somewhere sensible to go.
The Push Cart Mafia already agreed to walk 18 holes.
We shouldn’t have to walk the next six protecting a plastic cup like it’s the Olympic flame.
