An anti-spill cup holder is one of those products that looks almost too good to be true. You may have seen those 3D-printed versions on Instagram or YouTube, sometimes called an “unspillable drink caddy.
It’s actually a pretty clever idea.
One of the products I came across was called MySpillNot. They used to sell this kind of drink caddy, although the product doesn’t seem to be available anymore.


I watched some of their old YouTube videos and UGC content. A lot of the demonstrations showed people holding the caddy and swinging it around, even in an office, to show that the drink wouldn’t spill.
It definitely gets your attention.
But to me, it also feels a little exaggerated.
I mean, how often do you actually need to walk around your office swinging a cup of coffee in circles?
It’s a fun way to demonstrate the physics behind the product, but I’m not sure that’s where an anti-spill cup holder is really useful in everyday life.
That made me think about a different question:
Who actually needs an anti-spill cup holder?
Where Does an Anti-Spill Cup Holder Actually Make Sense?
For me, the answer is pretty simple.
Think about having coffee on a boat, riding around on a golf cart, or even carrying a drink on a motorcycle.
Those environments are already moving.
You don’t need to intentionally swing your coffee around — the road, waves, bumps and turns are already doing that for you.
That’s where I think the idea of an anti-spill cup holder starts to make much more sense.
And that thinking eventually led me to design my own version: the Coffee Gimbal One.
Coffee Gimbal One — Made for Takeout Coffee



I designed the Coffee Gimbal One mainly for takeout coffee cups under 16 oz.
That distinction is important.
It’s not meant to be another giant water bottle holder. It’s not designed around 30 oz Stanley-style tumblers or oversized mugs.
It’s for something much more ordinary:
You stop somewhere, grab a takeout coffee, and want somewhere safe to put it.
The gimbal mechanism allows the cup to move as the surface around it moves, helping the coffee stay upright instead of following every tilt and bump.
Is it completely spill-proof?
No. I don’t think any honest designer should promise that.
But for the right cup and the right situation, it can make a real difference.
I Also Thought About People Who Travel All the Time
There’s another group of people I had in mind when designing it: people who are constantly traveling.
Flight attendants, pilots, frequent flyers and business travelers spend a lot of time walking through airports with luggage in one hand and coffee in the other.
In that situation, having somewhere to put your takeout coffee is surprisingly convenient.
Attach the holder to your luggage, put your coffee in it, and your hand is free again.
Then when you’re waiting for your flight, you can sit down, enjoy your coffee, take an Instagram-worthy photo, and make that little airport moment a bit nicer.
That, to me, is more useful than swinging a cup around an office just to prove that it doesn’t spill.
Why I Designed Mine Differently
I also didn’t want the Coffee Gimbal One to look like a typical anti-spill 3D-printed cup holder.
3D printing is great for prototyping and testing ideas, but for a finished product, I wanted something that felt more refined.
So I designed the Coffee Gimbal One using aerospace-grade aluminum alloy.
It feels more solid, more minimal, and more like something you could actually give as a gift.
Especially for someone who travels all the time.
Then I Started Thinking About Boats
Later, I designed another version: the Coffee Gimbal Pro.

This version is made for 330 ml and 500 ml cans.
Imagine being out on a boat with a few friends, fishing, talking, and having a cold beer.
The boat is constantly moving with the water. You put your drink down, a wave comes along, and suddenly your can is sliding or tipping over.
That’s a situation where an anti-spill design doesn’t feel like a gimmick anymore.
It actually solves something.
And the same idea can work on a golf cart, where bumps, turns and uneven ground can easily knock a drink around.
So, Does an Anti-Spill Cup Holder Really Work?
Yes — but I think the bigger question is where you use it.
Holding a drink caddy in an office and swinging it around makes for an impressive video. It shows the idea very clearly.
But that’s not how most people drink coffee.
Put the same basic idea on a boat, on a golf cart, on a motorcycle, or with someone constantly traveling through airports, and suddenly it becomes much more practical.
That’s what interests me as a designer.
Not just:
“Can I make a cup that doesn’t spill?”
But:
“Where would someone actually need this?”
For me, that second question is where the real design starts.
